Spatiotemporal evolution and the driving factors of meteorological drought in the Hun-Taizi River basin, NE China

Abstract The evolution of meteorological drought under global warming is great significance to risk management. Meanwhile, driving factors that influence hydrological and water cycle processes play an important role in assessment. Hun-Taizi River basin (HTRB) a region seriously troubled by China. Therefore, we reveal the characteristics its factors. First, standardized precipitation index (SPI) was adopted characterize drought. copula functions with highest goodness fit were established calculate return period Then, relationships between SPI climatic phenomena reflected cross-wavelet transform method results showed (1) HTRB varied greatly different periods, aggravated during spring autumn; (2) western, northwestern southeastern regions characterized high frequency, short duration low severity, while other long severity; (3) co-occurrence periods mild, moderate severe 1.9, 4.7 32.8 years joint 1.5, 3.0 9.3 years, respectively; (4) solar activity (sunspot), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Arctic (AO) strongly correlated HTRB.
